Ah yes, I was running away.  I was running away from all I had taken for granted, from a present that no longer held any value nor promise, and most of all, I was running away from a love so intense I failed to notice I was running away from none other than myself.  And now, here I am, flipping through pages, wondering just how much longer this running will continue, and when it is that this love will finally catch up to me?

Then, I ran out of breath and could run no more.

I can’t think of a better place to begin my story than in the present, for it is the present I which is a result of all of my past actions.  So, as I sit here, flipping through pages upon pages of never-ending bureaucracy, I can’t help but wonder how it is exactly that I ended up here, in this very precise moment, staring out a 10th floor window at the Houston, TX lunch traffic on Highway 59.

Ah yes, I was running away.

The Mermaid

Reaching solid ground had surely been no easy task under the stormy night skies the crew faced, but the captain had delivered his promise and now the crew sat along the beach weathered but alive.
The captain, however, was nowhere to be seen.
“I will search for him!” one of the men declared bravely. “he has risked his own life for ours and now I too will do the same for him.”
Such brave words he called out, they all thought, but he was unable to rouse as much as a response from anyone. Thus he set off to find the captain.
He would come to find him further down the beach, kneeling in front of a rock and talking to himself.
“Beautiful creature,” said the captain lifting a tropical red flower up in the air as if offering it to some maiden. But how could such an ordinary man with no vision of love, no affinity for great beauty ever be able to see the beautiful mermaid resting over the rock, flapping her tail flirtatiously.
